Grown Status: How to Perfect Hybrid Work

So, we’re 2 and a half years into this work-from-home thing, and like me, you’ve probably shifted into your hybrid system, and trying to find your groove in this new reality is not the easiest. That’s why I’m sharing a few tips on how I’ve made it work that you can add to your routine.

Building your Space

Whether it’s a corner of your room, its own room, or a nook in your apartment that you use for an “office” make that space your workspace. If your desk has to do double duty as a kitchen table or anything try to find a way to make it distinctly “work” it’ll help you keep work at work.

Home Office Must-Haves

  • Second screen
    • You know your favorite part of the office is the second screen.
  • Desk mat
    • This helps keep things neat and organized. Plus it helps the mouse work better!
  • Mouse
    • The pad on the laptop does not cut it, get a mouse.
  • Headphones with a mic
    • Even if you’re working from home alone having a mic when something like the AC or washing machine is on in the background is needed.
  • To do pad
    • Keep track of your work, also try to keep it work bag friendly in terms of size
  • Notebook
    • For the same reason as the to-do pad, you need to take physical notes.

Nice to Haves

  • Desk organizers
    • I like to use this to store old notebooks I may need to reference and other random desk things.
  • Extra keyboard
    • I don’t have one, but I know they’re super helpful just not a necessity for me.
  • Something to listen to
    • I like to use Libby, podcasts, and my workday playlists
  • Laptop stand
    • These help with posture and can help use your second screen more effectively.

Take Breaks

You need to take breaks during your day, just do it. It can be super difficult to step away when you’re at home but it’s not healthy. I like to use a Pomodoro timer on busy days.

Embrace the Office + Team Meetups

There are benefits to being in person, and you should acknowledge and indulge in them. Building increased rapport with your colleagues is important, you just don’t need to do it every day for it to be effective. Make your in-office outfit cute, pack a good lunch the night before, and make it more fun than mundane.
