It’s Memorial Day which means summer activities have officially begun, which also means it’s time to talk about sunscreen. I know as black girls most of us went through a phase where we thought our melanin was the only protection we needed, and while melanin can protect against sun damage we still should all be wearing sunscreen regularly.
Once I started looking for a chemical exfoliant I learned through research that I would be more susceptible to sun damage so I started looking for facial sunscreens. There are a lot of options on the internet for sunscreens, but even though I’m not the darkest girl in the black community by far, I know that the wrong product could have me out here looking like Casper the Friendly Ghost. That’s when I came across SUPERGOOP! Everyday Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50 online. It’s sold at Sephora in a travel size for $19 so I went into the store to see what it was all about and decided to purchase.
Now lets get into the review of the product. I will say it smells like sunscreen, like Banana Boat, Neutrogena, Coppertone type sunscreen, but it isn’t unbearable and after application the smell went away for me. The texture can seem intimidating at first but its not too thick at all, and it can be used on both face and body (I prefer a spray sunscreen on my body so I only use this product on face) A major thing for me was flashback because during the summer my makeup is usually either non-existent or super minimal, so I did not want any ash on my face. With flash, there is a slight hint of ash if you squint and search for it and with no flash there is nothing (excuse my bonnet I did this while getting ready to go out).
All in all I like this product a lot. I’m glad I found a sunscreen that doesn’t make me look ashy for an affordable price. If you’re a deeper skin tone than me know there are clear gel sunscreens as well, like Glossier’s, that you might like but if you want to test this product out you could hit up your local Sephora. I will say Supergoop! sells other sun products so even if you’re not in love with this one they have an almost overwhelming amount of options from foams to sprays and creams.
Do you wear facial sunscreen? Why or why not? If you do what’s your favorite? Let me know in the comments!

This looks like a great product! Finding a good face sunscreen is so hard.
Omg right!
It’s good to find a sunscreen for Black girls. I should check outs the SUPERGOOP everyday Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50 when I am going down the shore. I checked it out on Sephora site and it is quite reasonably priced.
Yea it’s been great to me so far! I’d definitely recommend checking it out
Thanks for this review! I’ve been wanting to try Supergoop for a while, so I think I’ll pick some up when my current sunscreen runs out 🙂
Glad I could help
I’ll have to look into this! It is always hard for me to find a facial sunscreen
Finding a sunscreen that is good for you is a tough thing. I have super oily skin and it took me months to find one that will be good for me. It seems like a nice product. Thanks for the review.
I would love an update after extended use…because $19 for a travel size is pricey lol but if it works I’ll purchase it!
I’ve had it for a month $19 dollars is a little pricey for sure but similar sized products that are brown girl friendly have tended to run even higher (at least ones I have access too) hopefully I can get more information and share more options for products though because that $19 hurt lol
I absolutely do not wear sunscreen and this is a great reminder that I need to. I will definitely pick this up on my next trip to Sephora!
As a brown girl, I relate to the struggle of finding a suncream that works for me so I tend to just avoid it!
I can only imagine your struggle! My skin is so pale that I almost reflect the sun, but since I’ve already had skin cancer once I need to wear sunblock every day. Even with my white skin, many of the zinc sunblocks leave thick white stripes on my skin. Supergoop looks great!
That’s the worst! And congrats on beating cancer!
I love this and thanks for sharing! I’ve always struggled with the sunscreens that leave you looking purple and hella ashy! At the moment I’ve been using one from Lancome which is really good as it’s also a moisturizer so I don’t have to actively remember to use sunscreen!
Thank you for sharing this! I will definitely consider purchasing it. A lot of the sunscreen I find seem to make me look ashy. I use a moisturizer with sunscreen included (Cetaphil). I need to get better at using sunscreen daily.
Thanks!
I’ve been looking for a black girl friendly sunscreen. Sucks that it’s such a struggle to find one for us! I will be searching for this product today! Thanks for the recommendation
Of course!
This product looks amazing, and I need a new face sunscreen!
