It’s officially February which means it’s black history month AND Valentine’s day is right around the corner. To get us in the spirit for both, I’m going to share some of my favorite black love stories, and where you can find a few to stream.
Love Jones

Some consider this 1997 film too slow for their taste, but I think the simplicity relaxing and a great watch for a night in with wine and popcorn.
Stream it on BET+ and HBO Max
A Different World

If you’re a Simply Syd veteran you know this television series is an all-time favorite. Dwayne and Whitley are an iconic sitcom couple who will always be top 2 (and they’re not number 2).
Stream it on Amazon Prime
Southside with You

This movie is a recreation of America’s favorite couple, Michelle and Barack Obama’s first date. It just kind of good vibes.
Stream it on Amazon Prime and Pluto TV
Insecure

This one may surprise you, but I don’t think love always has to be pretty, sometimes it’s messy. Also, who doesn’t love Issa?
Stream it on HBO Max
Just Wright

I love Queen Latifah, she is perfect, this movie is perfect just find it and watch it please.
I couldn’t find this on the general streaming apps but maybe that will change in time for Valentine’s Day
Love Don’t Cost a Thing

This one is for the lovers of teen/coming of age films. Be warned, you will want to dance with Nick Cannon in the beach party scene.
I couldn’t find this on the general streaming apps but maybe that will change in time for Valentine’s Day
Brown Sugar

In what is personally my favorite Taye Diggs performance of all time, Brown Sugar is an underrated classic.
I couldn’t find this on the general streaming apps but maybe that will change in time for Valentine’s Day
That’s So Raven
This is for my childish people, just watch the episodes with Raven and Devon. It’s the definition of black love.
Stream it on Disney+
Honorary Mentions
Beyond the Lights
I cannot in good faith recommend you stream this film due to Nate Parker’s history, but if you have the DVD dust it off and find somewhere to use it because it’s definitely one of my favorites and I couldn’t NOT mention it.
Wake of the Wind
The above are not movies or TV shows (if any executives, so it doesn’t technically qualify for this list, BUT I love this story and it’s honestly just a beautiful book about the story of blackness in the United States period.
